Women's Officer - Nora Mulready

Hello, my name is Nora Mulready and I am the new Women's Officer for the Tottenham CLP. I wanted to introduce myself to you and invite all members, (regardless of gender) to contact me if they would like to get involved with work on women's rights and equality, in the UK and abroad, over the coming year.

The Year Ahead: Highlighting Work Done

I want to work to highlight the positive steps that have been made by our Labour government - the right to request flexible working for parents and carers, the introduction of the minimum wage - (which disproportionately benefits women, as women tend to be in lower paid work) and the introduction of the Equality and Human Rights Act.

Work still to do

Over the coming year, I hope to work with other members of the Tottenham CLP to highlight problems faced by women in the world today. From the gender pay-gap, to domestic violence and the lack of women's refuges, to circumcision of women and girls, to forced marriage and honour killings.

I would like to invite speakers from organisations who work on these issues to come and speak to the Tottenham Labour Party. This may include the Fawcett Society, the Southall Black Sisters, the Poppy Appeal, the Helen Bamber Foundation and Amnesty International. If you have any suggestions for speakers/organisations, please let me know by emailing me at the address above.

I would like to organise fundraisers for organisations that do essential work for women, and who depend on donations to survive. For example, organisations that provide services to women and children (and men), who have 'No Recourse to Public Funds.' This is essential work, without which many families would be homeless and destitute.

Please do get in touch if you would like to be involved in this over the coming year - I look forward to working with you!
