Tottenham Labour at Tottenham
Carnival

Tottenham Labour Party had a fantastic and
successful day at the Tottenham Carnival last
weekend.
There was a lot of support for the Tottenham
Young Labour Petition on tougher sentences for people caught
carrying knives. We recognise that this is not the whole solution
to the problem, but we believe that it is certainly
part of the solution.
Almost everyone who passed our stall wanted to
sign the petition and we ended up with over four hundred signatures
from people at the carnival. This petition will now be sent to the
Home Secretary and the Prime Minister, sending a message from the
people of Tottenham that enough is enough.

Southall Black
Sisters
There was also
support for the Save the Southall Black Sisters campaign, which we
are actively supporting. The Southall Black Sisters have been the
pre-eminent women’s rights and anti domestic violence charity for
women from black and ethnic minority communities. They have done
outstanding work on forced marriage and so-called honour killings
and have saved the lives of many many women since they started work
in 1979. Ealing’s Tory Council has now threatened to cut their core
funding, which Ealing Council has provided since the 1970s. As a
result the organisation may have to close. This would be a great
shame for many individual women who look to SBS for help, as well
as a sad day for the women’s rights
movement.

stall and spoke with many constituents.
David

“I was delighted to
attend Tottenham Carnival and to meet and talk with the people of
Tottenham. This was especially nice amidst the vibrant carnival
colours, the wonderful food, the music and dancing, and
the great carnival
atmosphere. The Tottenham Carnival is a very special event in the
Tottenham calendar and I am very pleased to see it going from
strength to strength each year.”

Mayor & Councillors
We were also
visited by the Labour Mayor of Haringey, Alan Dobbie, as well as
young councillors from Haringey (Cllr Dilek Dogus and Cllr Emma
Jones) and Hackney (Cllr Feryat Demirci) Labour Groups. It was
great to have some inter-borough solidarity and they really helped
to make it a great day.
